G-Synch - V-Synch

Go to solution Solved by 79wjd,

V sync caps the games fps at the refresh rate of your monitor (in order to prevent tearing) while Gsync syncs your FPS and refresh rate.

Say your GPU can push 100 FPS but your monitor can only display 60FPS so part way through displaying the image the GPU sends the monitor a new image, so you end up with two half-images being displayed on the screen -- also know as tearing. Vsync will limit your FPS to 60 in order to prevent that from occurring. The downside to Vsync is that it can add some input lag into the game, which is not great.

On the other hand, Gsync would allow your monitor to refresh the image whenever the GPU is ready to send out a new frame resulting in a smoother experience (and also preventing tearing).

Can someone give me a "for dummies" version of what these actually are/do.

Should I have both on? What the deal? Really confused lol

VSync locks your framerate to the refresh rate of the monitor

GSync is a variable refresh rate. It refreshes your monitor based on your graphics card(s) as appose to the traditional opposite way.

I will happily endure screen tearing over the increased latency of VSync.

Vsync caps FPS so that you don't get screen tearing. BUT, it introduces some input lag, and depending on the game, it can be major lag - hindering your mouse input.

G Sync is Nvidia's special technology of telling the monitor to only refresh when the GPU renders a new frame - effectively getting rid of all lag caused by Vsync AND getting rid of screen tearing.

I don't think gsync works after a certain fps depending on the monitor, I hate vsync in general as the input lag it creates is not worth it, however it depends on a game by game basis, single player games for the most part I'm okay with vsync however mp games strictly no vsync for me. I would leave it disabled vsync that is and keep G sync on.

V-Sync caps the games frame rate at the refresh rate of your monitor to prevent screen tearing, but this creates lag. G-Sync is a module inside a monitor that varies the monitors refresh rate with a games FPS, but this adds about $200 to the price of a monitor. It also requires you to have a Nvidia GPU

V sync caps the games fps at the refresh rate of your monitor (in order to prevent tearing) while Gsync syncs your FPS and refresh rate.

So it is best to have V sync off and G sync on?

Gsync requires a Gsync monitor -- so if you're paying the $200+ premium, you want Gsync on (plus Gsync is a good thing). Vsync on the other hand should usually be left off imo (unless leaving it off is causing an issue) as I'd take tearing over input lag anyday.
