I am having issues with my internet. I don't have the greatest internet speed but I can get any better where I am (Australia). lately my internet has been extra shitty, inconsistent speeds, random disconnections (not very common but it still happens enough to give me the shits lol).

For example, I will do the speed test that everyone knows and loves, I get good ping and good enough speeds since I can't get any better but as soon as I join a game of cs-go my ping spikes up to 300+ sometimes maxing out at 999. It sometimes drops down the normal ping for a min but it will eventually go back up and I can't even move in game.

Also If I reset my modem router it will stop the lag for only a couple mins but the modem takes ages to connect back to the internet after restarting sometimes. Way longer than it used to. Had this modem for a couple years now.

I have a Netgear DGND3700 Dual Band Wireless N600 modem router. I was wondering if I should buy a new one to solve this issue. Let me know your thoughts guys.

There are usually about 4 devices connected through wireless.

are you on wireless? yes? thats problem one.

second: scream at your local congress critter to put down fiber.

EDIT; should add this to make people jelly: even frikkin' belgium is going to get fiber to the home, and gigabit speeds in a few years.

if you are constantly loading different web pages every minute that would slow down the speeds, from what I've heard the Australian serves down there are horrid, I'd call your ISP and ask if inconsistent speeds are normal, and if they aren't have them come down and check to make sure everythings alright, the router doesn't matter too much unless you have Dual Band with 2.4/5GHz other then that, the router doesn't matter too too much

yes I use a wireless card in my pc. I have used wireless in another house that has fiber and I don't have these problems. We have fiber in some areas but not many sadly. I have experienced the glory of 100mbps and it was amazing.

So you would not recommend a new one?

Same, I don't ever have problems with wireless

in response to your question

Not necessarily, if you feel like you want an upgrade go ahead, but its not necessary as I am using a WRT54GS still which is old; December 2002 old; you should be fine, I would call your ISP and ask them to look at it

probably either ISP or just the infrastructure. I'm using EoP with a wireless backup (both seem fairly quick, max steam DL speeds of ~3.6MB/s on Eop and 2.2 on Wireless, but I get alot of dropouts, but they are completely random, sometimes i have 5 in the space of half an hour, then go on for 6 hours without any issue. Who is your ISP btw, mine's Optus.

apparently that what we Aussies are/were supposed to be getting eventually. Unless the rather stupid idea of Fibre to the streets then copper to the homes is now what is happening.

Yeah Tony Rabbit seems to think we don't need a decent internet speed.

well, here it's not official, but i have my sources ;)

and here the current situation is fibre backbone (and a dang good one at that) and coax to the home, i'm happy with 200Mbit over rusty coax.
