can i raid?

Go to solution Solved by Tech_Dreamer,

so just upgrade without raid..

yeah, i'm afraid so, unless you want to buy a similar sized drive or another 256 drive, other than that ,it's best to just upgrade & keep your data safe that way..

You could but you would lose half the space on the second drive.. Better off just going for 1 boot drive and 1 for other stuff you want on it if mis-matching the sizes.

what do you mean? lose half of it?

Raid will use volumes of equal size. So you would have 2x 120GB that you could raid.. you won't be able to use the rest of the 240GB in this case (unless something has changed since the last time I was messing with raid about 7 years ago..)

Hello!

i have 1 WD 1TB  and a samsung 840 evo 120gb SSD (as boot).

can i raid if i add another samsung 850 evo 256gb SSD?? or theres no need...?!

Hey Mr Fister,

RAID arrays generally limit each drive's speed to the one with the slowest and the capacity of each drive to the one with the smallest. RAIDing two different SSDs might not be a good idea also because differences in the firmware might cause drive dropouts and data corruption. I would suggest keeping your system as it is and simply add another SSD for more demanding applications and files.

it all depends on your raid controller.

The built-in one on my work PC can 'raid' the SSD and the HDD. But it is acting more like a SSHD, and not really raid. Just use folder re-direction for your documents etc from your c:\ (120gb SSD) to your d:\ (assuming 1TB Black). Heck just moving all the user profiles to the 1TB wont really degrade performance at all (assuming word documents etc).
