Hey guys, I need to install a copy of Windows XP on my PC, but I do not have a secondary HDD installed, so I must install it on a separate partition.

I've read some topics about the hazard of installing the older system later, that it could mess your boot sector up.

I would like to know whether it is possible to install Windows XP (SP2) on my PC (running Windows 8.1) without any risks.

Both copies are 64 bit versions, if it matters.

Also, I cannot use VirtualBox, because the software I'm trying to get to work does not operate in a virtual enviroment.

Why doesn't it work in a virtual machine? do you need serial connections?

I need to use the Source SDK which requires 3D visualization, and if I'm not mistaking it does not work in VirtualBox.

the source sdk works fine in newer os's

Not the Faceposer.

ersion 1.1
Tom Edwards, 12th August 2010

This updated extractor provides better results than the
SDK's default one. It works on Windows 7 and Windows Vista
for Source 2007 and 2009.

1.1 is exactly the same as 1.0, save for a new message box
that prompts you to change your speech recognition language
if it is not UK English. I don't know why this is needed, but
it fixes the gibberish phonemes people were getting!

To install
**********

Extract the contents of the zip file to the bin\phonemeextractors\
folder of the SDK or game you are working with. You will
overwrite an existing DLL.

Example paths:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\ACCCOUNT\sourcesdk\bin\sourc e2007\bin\phonemeextractors\

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\bin\phonemeextractors\
!! NOT \left 4 dead\left4dead\bin\ !!

KEEP A BACKUP HANDY. Every time you run the SDK Launcher (or in
the case of L4D1/2 receive an update) the custom DLL will
be replaced with Valve's original, and you'll have to
put it back in place manually.

The easiest way to run Faceposer without using Valve's launcher
is with the Source SDK Windows Gadget:

You'll probably find that FP crashes if you try to run it directly,
since it's very particular about its working directory.

go to disk management in windows and make a second partition of ~30GB and install it there.

Shrank the partition, formatted it, changed the boot order, got a blue screen / error, shat my pants, quickly deleted the new partition and extended it back.

After the SteamPipe update has struck the SDK became a complete mess, it's pretty broken, but Valve does not care about it.

Yeah, cause they are working on Source 2

  1. Remove everything on your HDD. This means all partitons. All of them.

Set the SATA controller to IDE in your BIOS. XP does not support AHCI.

Make a 60GB partition for XP. This is all you need.

Install XP to said partition with the CD (PM me if you need one)

Install Windows 8.1 to the rest of the hard drive (again, PM me if you need a DVD).

Now, during each boot it should ask you which OS to load. As far as I know, Windows 8.1's bootloader is the bootmgr, which has been used since Vista, and which can load XP. However, XP uses the old NTLDR, which can't boot anything newer than XP. This is why we install XP first - to make sure it doesn't overwrite the bootmgr.
