Hello

Is it possible to make cutscenes 21.9 in games like Witcher 3 and GTA 5

Thanks

If you mean pre-rendered cutscenes, then no. That just won't happen.

If you mean real-time rendered in the engine, then it should in theory tie to your resolution normally.

^Above is the best answer you can get, mark that answer as solved @Metro!

Do you think this will ever happen, that pre rendered cutscenes will be in 21.9 and 16.9, then it chooses by looking at the monitor.

Sadly not. Speaking as a developer, it's like everything else in the games industry - it's one or the other.

More often than not the developer will render cutscenes in 16:9 on the basis that it's the most common aspect ratio for monitors, next to 16:10.

Sometimes when the developer pre-renders cutscenes with the sole intention of it looking "cinematic" or whatever, they'll sometimes go with 21:9, like The Evil Within.

The reason for them picking one or the other is a combination of time constraints, space constraints, and, well, because it's easier to just go with what everyone has and stick with it. By significant comparison, very few people own a 21:9 monitor, so unless the game used in-engine cutscenes (which should be more prevalent in times to come), you're invariably gonna end up with the shorter end of the stick.

As for space and time...well, let's be honest, it takes a while to render the cutscenes normally. Look at how nicely animated the cutscenes in, say, Deus Ex: Human Revolution are...then contrast it by how compressed it looks, especially on PC. They were rendered in 1280x720 across all platforms, simply because that was the resolution the consoles ran it, it looked decent enough on PCs, and simply because rendering them at a higher resolution for specific hardware would be trivial if something else works just fine. That, and they're small enough to fit the entire game onto two or three dual-layer DVDs, or to lessen the strain on a person's rather shabby internet connection......AKA me.

TL;DR = No. Space and time woo-woo matched up with a make-do attitude basically mean it won't happen, unless it is rendered in-engine.

If they just designed the shot for 16:9 but rendered the cut scene at a 21:9 ratio and then provided an additional cropped 16:9 version that played depending on display options, this would solve the OPs question with minimal work. I hope this was clear enough. Technically you could do the above but instead of providing a cropped version, the game itself could crop the cutscene as it's being played for the same effect.

It's not a new concept, many television shows were done this way before the transition from 4:3 to 16:9.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking, this means it could show both 16.9 and 21.9 cutscenes in the game.

I cant see why it couldn't be done with minimal investment of time and money. The best I can figure it is that its either a case of creating a consistent product no matter the screen ratio, or simple laziness.
