cpu drivers?

Go to solution Solved by runit3,

GUYS i'm not installing a new mobo, why think that? I said cpu...

If it is only the CPU no drivers are needed. If you're not changing the chipset you can swap as many compatible CPU's as you would like. Also, Windows' activation should not trigger.

Have fun

You can just boot up.

You may need to install drivers from your motherboard's manufacturer in order to gain full functionality of the board though (networking drivers, etc...).

you can just start it up. the integrated graphics has drivers, but you are likely not using it...

I think Windows does actually have built-in CPU "drivers" of some sort, but nothing you need to mess with. You certainly will not be downloading and installing a driver.

The bigger issue is that if you installed a new motherboard as well, any motherboard components not integrated into the chipset will need drivers: LAN, audio, possibly USB, etc.

I said "if," I don't know what your situation is because you didn't give that much detail. Just covering bases. Most worthwhile CPU upgrades generally require a new motherboard socket these days, so it's a fair concern to have.

Then no, if you're upgrading to a CPU in the same class which you most likely are seeing as though you're not replacing your motherboard. You may be asked to re-activate Windows, but you should be good.

I've known people reinstall the OS, just to be on the safe side, but you really shouldn't have to with just a CPU swap.
