I recently bought a CAT6 50ft. ethernet cable to get to my router downstairs.  I went to test the speeds of it and I got a steady 10.8 mb/s when downloading steam games. No other applications that used wifi were open. But when I went to speedtest.net I got a 90 mb/s download, 10 mb/s upload, and 13ms ping. I was confused. Shouldn't I be getting 90mb/s when downloading steam games and other things of the sort?

90mbps is 11.25mb/s. So you get exactly what you should be getting.

Steam measures speed in MB/s, whereas speedtests measure it in Mb/s.

8Mb = 1MB.

90Mb/s / 8 = 11.25MB/s

No, since the download speed from Steam depends on THEIR servers, not your connection speed.

Download speed also depends on your HDD write speed.

From your post I take it you're using WiFi, so there's another bottleneck, since WiFi is generally slower than a LAN connection.

Speedtest only shows you your maximum down/up (to put it in rough terms) which you can use to compare the speeds promised from the ISP to what you actually get.

I forgot that they measure differently (steam in MB/s and speedtest in mbps)
