Adapting from ADSL
I want to buy a higher end router to better manage the load on my network ( prioritize LAN over wifi , and certain PCs over others ) , because the one that i use is from my ISP ( Huawei HG658 ) . But most of them have this only ethernet wan port and can't connect to the ADSL RJ-11 phone line .
- Can i simply adapt the RJ-11 connector to the RJ-45 and plug it into the better router ?
- If not , can i use this to adapt from my phone line to the better router http://www.tp-link.com/sa/products/details/cat-15_TD-8816.html ?
- Will it decrease internet performance , increase ping ( even if i have quite a slow internet connection 10mbps ) ?
- If not , will it decrease internet performance , or increase ping if i get a better internet connection ( 100 + mbps ) ?
You can probably get an ADSL2+ modem for very little and then get any high end router.
Personally I use a Huawei HG612 which is a brilliant modem that I hacked to get WebUI and other features for. I believe it supports ADSL2+ but I use it for VDSL2.
My modem has two LAN ports, LAN1 goes to my routers WAN port, and LAN 2 goes to my switch LAN24 port. The second one is to make the modems WebUI and monitoring interfaces available in my LAN.
Anyway, find the ADSL standard that your ISP uses and look into modems for that. Draytek, D-Link and NetGear all have products that meet your criteria.
But I think that any router prioritisation will be quite ineffective when on an ADSL connection, when on something with a little more upload you will probably find this to be less needed.
For a router, I recommend a ubiquiti EdgeRouter lite, it's small and cheap and VERY good. Has a great interface too.
Oh and @Wombo, I don't think he's confused, he probably doesn't know the difference between a modem and a router, can't blame people these days because ISPs and networking companies alike are very misleading.
