Adapting from ADSL

Go to solution Solved by .:MARK:.,

I want to buy a higher end router to better manage the load on my network ( prioritize LAN over wifi , and certain PCs over others ) , because the one that i use is from my ISP ( Huawei HG658 ) . But most of them have this only ethernet wan port and can't connect to the ADSL RJ-11 phone line .

  1. Can i simply adapt the RJ-11 connector to the RJ-45 and plug it into the better router ?
  2. If not , can i use this to adapt from my phone line to the better router http://www.tp-link.com/sa/products/details/cat-15_TD-8816.html ?
  3. Will it decrease internet performance , increase ping ( even if i have quite a slow internet connection 10mbps ) ?
  4. If not , will it decrease internet performance , or increase ping if i get a better internet connection ( 100 + mbps ) ?

You can probably get an ADSL2+ modem for very little and then get any high end router.

Personally I use a Huawei HG612 which is a brilliant modem that I hacked to get WebUI and other features for. I believe it supports ADSL2+ but I use it for VDSL2.

My modem has two LAN ports, LAN1 goes to my routers WAN port, and LAN 2 goes to my switch LAN24 port. The second one is to make the modems WebUI and monitoring interfaces available in my LAN.

Anyway, find the ADSL standard that your ISP uses and look into modems for that. Draytek, D-Link and NetGear all have products that meet your criteria.

But I think that any router prioritisation will be quite ineffective when on an ADSL connection, when on something with a little more upload you will probably find this to be less needed.

For a router, I recommend a ubiquiti EdgeRouter lite, it's small and cheap and VERY good. Has a great interface too.

Oh and @Wombo, I don't think he's confused, he probably doesn't know the difference between a modem and a router, can't blame people these days because ISPs and networking companies alike are very misleading.

im not sure why you want more then 1 wan port??

I don't want more then 1 wan port . I want this modem to take the ADSL that comes from the phone line , and change it into a Ethernet wire that i can put into a decent router .

you would want ping to decrease not increase also not sure.

I mean how much ping will this extra step add to the total ping time .

I personally use a Netgear D6200, Awesome AC router that does have a phone line port that works with ADSL

Human intelligence decreases with increasing proximity to oncoming traffic.

I feel you may be a little confused. ADSL coming in over RJ11 will never be able to talk with an RJ45 port running the Ethernet standard. The router provided by your ISP also has a modem in it. This modem is what is responsible for taking your local Ethernet traffic destined for the internet and putting it on the ADSL line. You may be able to use your own modem and connect that to a router however then you will also need a switch for your local LAN. Also, using your own modem requires you know how to dial into your ISP and authenticate to their DSLAM using PPPoE.

Easiest way, talk to your ISP and ask if they allow you to use your own modem and router to connect to their network. They may say no to the modem but most will say yes to the router.

Oh and @Wombo, I don't think he's confused, he probably doesn't know the difference between a modem and a router, can't blame people these days because ISPs and networking companies alike are very misleading.

Comb it with a brick
