I am looking into furthering my knowledge in overclocking.

I want the cheapest possible test pc which I can practice overclocking on.

Probably like a g3258?

Not too sure about the rest of the parts I should be getting with regards to price/overclocking potential, so would love some advice :)

Dunno why you would need to test it though.  Overclocking is not hard, and as long as you don't throw 5+ GHz or 1.5 volts right at it, there is virtually no harm you can do.

Mainly for fun/I wanted an extra little PC to mess about with, without being afraid of the consequences.

I didnt want to accidently do something wrong whilst im learning and damage my 4790K.

@Speaker1264

Will the stock fan be alright or should I get a better air cooler for the g3258?

the best sockets for overclocking are am3+ and 775. they both are cheaper second hand and have way more things to set and play with. you also have a much wider choice of cpu's that you can oc because you can overclocked locked cpu's very easily and quite far.

Rig Specs:

AMD Threadripper 5990WX@4.8Ghz

Asus Zenith III Extreme

Asrock OC Formula 7970XTX Quadfire

G.Skill Ripheartout X OC 7000Mhz C28 DDR5 4X16GB

I'd start with AM3(+). Cheap and you can choose from a lot of CPUs.

Pick up a used 990FX UD3 Rev4 as that's a solid basis to start with.
