So I am building a pc right now and I am plugging in the optical drive. The power cable for it is plugged in but it there is no Sata data cable? Is this bad?

Yes. You need that if you are going to transfer data...

which model is it? it gennerally it's next to the sata power connector

 

no i mean my psu cords don't have a sata data cable to plug in there

Just like Juanse said the power connection on the device and the sata connection on the device are right beside each other for an optical drive and yes if you don't have both connected it is bad as you won't be able to read or write anything with media with that optical drive.
