Noisy Hard Drive Heads

Go to solution Solved by Captain_WD,

HereyouGo :]

According to the S.M.A.R.T. the drive is completely healthy so I'd say you are safe. I'd look around for comments on this drive and see if other people have problems with it being loud. You can always contact the manufacturer and see what they have to say about this plus they can give you some useful advice and tips. :)

PS: I simply love the wallpaper!!!

I have some OEM 300 GB Samsung Hard Drive im using until my 1tb WD Black comes in the mail, and the Heads are really loud, is this the sign of a dying hard drive? is there any way to replace it? or just a crappy drive.

Define loud, is it a constant whir? Or a rattle-type sound? Or a screech? The WD Black is a louder drive naturally compared to a blue or similar-tier barracuda.

Also run crystaldiskinfo

It's more of a rattle whenever the hard drive actually does work (moves files, installing, casual browsing, etc.)

I'd say it's fine to use for now, but don't put data that you would care about if you lost it on there.

Hey kgorringe,

Could you post a screenshot of the bottom part of the test (the S.M.A.R.T. results)? A drive can be loud for a number of reasons. I would suggest using the diagnostic tool provided by the manufacturer jsut to be on the safe side it is OK.
