Linux Minecraft installation

Ay mates, need help installing minecraft on ubuntu 14.10, i already did the download java, install drivers, edit permission to allow file execution blah blah blah. I double click the .jar and get the archive manager instead of the minecraft login whatcha-dozit. Im almost certain im a complete noob and i have to go into a menu and click a check box or something, but an hour of poking around through folders and permission menus has got me nothing. Any help is super appreciated thanks.

Did you allow it to run as an executable? Didn't read properly.

You only need to update java and get the jar...

yeah i went into the permissions and checked the "allow file to run as progam"  box

i just downloaded openjdk java 7 all of 2 hours ago

Just read through that lynda article. It will go into more detail about how to get it to run. This should work.

right click the jar icon, open/run with Java.

i just found out that there have been problems with my current java environment not being able to recognize .jar files, going to download a different one and see if that works

yep installed a new environment and everything worked fine, turns out im not a noob, just shitty software.
