Alrighty!! So the computer shop said that they will try the disk platter transfer on my old hard drive:

Hitachi HDS728080PLA380

I bought a cheap one off ebay and it's working:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/141683658206

And the shop has both of these drives. They said they will charge me only $45 to transfer over the platter (ONLY IF IT WORKS). If it doesn't work they will not charge me anything. Which is very nice of them :)

My question is, obviously it will work if they do it correctly and not get any dust on the platter right?

My second question is, even though they are the same model number, is their firmware the same? Would it still even work even if the transfer was successful?

To swap platters correctly, you need the proper tools to realign everything to the thousands of an inch tolerances, only the manufacturer could do that, and I HIGHLY doubt a rinky-dink run of the mill repair shop would have those tools.  If this is important data, contact the manufacturer and have them do it.

But besides that, you should be fine if you got the same model number.

Well, these guys seem to know what they're doing and said they will give it a try and seem very reputable. I interviewed the CEO 3 years ago at my local college. Seemed very smart imo. But, it's the last chance I have, and it's only 1 stupid file I need and they said they will try it.. so why not lol.

So, I guess it depends how good they are, it's only a single platter if that helps.  But that's good news you said it should still work im anxious now :)

Single platter helps a lot. Have they done this before/often? Being an older drive might help too.

No idea, but they have been around forever and are highly reputable.. Nicest people I've met. I think they figured they'd give it a try since it's single plattered and an older 80gb hitachi. Those things are well damn built tho lol
