PC Randomly Shuts Down

Go to solution Solved by Rashy,

@0x1e oh poo, cmos resetting doesnt work

i thought it was working for a few minutes... i played bf4 on zavod 311 for about 40 minutes or so without restart, but it restarted anyway. sooooo PSU it is. just when im broke, paid like large cash for school so.. yeah. probably stuck with this for a year or two

Hi LinusTechTips Community, ive been trying to troubleshoot this problem a month or two, my first contact was @LarsReviews

About my problem: My PC has been really annoying, when i play BF4 or Csgo it can shutdown unexpectedly and restarts itself, theres no error message whatsoever, Whocrashed shows nothing, AIDA64 SST shows nothing. Im running everything at stock speed in the moment, My temps are always stable at 60-ish celcius when gaming. Its really annoying when you fight in BF4, when theres peak fights where everything was out, i was able to prolong my game time without shutting down by limiting frames, in osu! i limited my frames and there was no crash after that, but in BF4 theres still crashes. No warning before crashes, no bsod, no dumps, no nothing.. just like a hard reset.

TL;DR: PC Crashes with no message at high load in games

System Spec:

  • CPU: AMD FX-6300
  • Motherboard: MSI 970A-G43
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB Dual Channel 1600Mhz
  • GPU: MSI R7790
  • Case: Dazumba D-Vito 903
  • Storage: Seagate 1TB, 500GB
  • PSU: Corsair VS550
  • Display(s): LG 22M35 21.5 Inch
  • Cooling: Cooler Master HYPER 103
  • Keyboard: GENIUS K627
  • Mouse: Logitech Classic K100:
  • Sound: Razer Electra
  • Operating System: Windows 8.1 64Bit

Things i tried:

  • enabling GPU scaling, nothing
  • installed AMD Driver catalyst 15.6 Beta, nothing
  • changing GPU, obviously a fail because the only spare gpu i have was a HD4350, and the drivers are nonexistent
  • AIDA64 System Stability Test, froze at 10 minutes
  • Prime95 mixed test, for 30 min nothing
  • AVG 2015 Full PC Scan, seems to make sense at the moment. so.. nothing
  • 3DMark Skydiver, nothing

When i analyze in Whocrash and nothing showed up i knew it was hardware problem, but what part? and how did i broke it? Time is ticking.. i just activated 100% XP Boost in BF4 :L

If it doesn't freeze before it restarts then I would assume the PSU is cutting out.

I'm guessing the PSU can't handle the high constant load.

If it is the PSU, how can i fix it? whats the cause. We need to dig deeper before filing a part request to my parents :L

Overclock the PSU until it burns up. Then tell your parents it's busted and you need a new one.

Or just skip that, make sure it's actually the PSU and say you need a new one.

Me personally believe it could be the PSU, but someone else may have a different theory.

Such as what 98.943242342% of the people say on the forums "Remove the Cmos battery then pray to the old and new Gods"

It's not a race to the bottom.

Remember all your bios settings.

It will reset as if it's new. So all overclocks, ram settings, boot priorities, fan set ups, lighting schemes, time and date and so on will be gone.

Remove it for around 30 seconds or more, put it back in. Boot into bios, set everything up correctly and see what happens later.
