I know this isnt a car forum, but i was wondering if someone may be able to help out anyways. There are smart people here, im sure someone knows what to do.

Recently, I was given a 1977 Monte Carlo, and i was fixing it up. It runs well, but iv got a small problem.

I have a set of subwoofers (1200w peak) that i would like to install. The problem is the car has a very old generator. Not alternator, a full generator.

This means that if i dont want the cars battery to slowly die over time, i have to take it out to a highway for a few minutes each week and let it run high. Otherwise with the lower engine speeds involved in most in-town driving, the generator makes less power than it takes to start it.

Id like to be able to use my good sound system, but as it is i have to be careful with the headlights and fan on at the same time.

What are your suggestions on what to do? Do i simply need a larger battery? Or if i have to replace the generator, how hard would it be to install an Alternator?

Thanks a ton!

Look into a deep cycle Optima gel battery. My dad who got me into car audio had one when he had his sound system (2 12" planet audio subs from before their buyout) I think he was close to 2k watts and he was able to go out on the beach, shut the engine down and listen for hours. When he wanted to go home, the engine cranked right over and he left.

Ill have to look into that. That sounds like it would help me last longer, but it wont help much if the car cant recharge it on its own.

Its worth looking into though, thanks!
