Google is launching a free tier of their "Google Play Music All Access" (what a mouthful) which is powered by Songza, a Pandora like company that they acquired not too long ago.

Google's ad-supported curated music service is essentially a "radio-like" service where you listen to music that was chosen for you. This may not be as good as being able to select your own songs to play, but the service is free as long as you are willing to listen to a few ads every few songs. Also, some users may like that there's still that serendipity factor that makes listening to music more interesting and engaging than knowing ahead of time exactly what song is going to play.

It's rolling out to iOS and Android devices this week and will only be available in the US for the time being.

The free ad-supported service is now available on the web. Android and iOS apps will be rolling out this week, according to Google.

I'm not sure what's the purpose of this but I guess it's nice to have more competition, albeit no different from other internet radio such as Pandora. What are your thoughts on this? I've tried Songza in the past but always went back to Spotify and Pandora because Songza's library felt a bit small at the time.

Well right now Google is pretty much trying to give people the complete package/ suite of applications without having to go threw third party or anything without the google name. Just like apple has a suite of things google wants to be the end all be all. I am all for it.

I always use pandora, simply because thats what Im committed to. I have a collection of music, yet I always seem to go back to pandora. Mostly on PC though, as the mobile version has 2-3 ads for every 4-5 songs and its kinda really annoying

Exactly, I built up my main Pandora station over years and it's hard if not impossible to replicate it on a different service. Maybe if Google could have their own version of Spotify free would it be more successful, but as it is, I feel like many people will just stick to what they've been using.
