Windows "Failure Configuring Updates. Reverting Changes." Error

Go to solution Solved by STRMfrmXMN,

Thank you for the response! When I first installed, it had around 180 updates. Do you think something went wrong then?

Also, what kind of reinstall? Should I redownload and make a fresh install disk from the same website, should I look for another website, should I just go straight for Windows 10 preview, or should I wait until Windows 10 is actually released?

Install now, that's fine. I know that ISOs with the latest updates exist but I'm not sure where one would get them. I know this because HP prebuilts with Windows 7 have them.

I would just do updates of about 40 or 50 at a time to limit the likelyhood of problems. Do security updates later and everything else first. You're going to have to manually uncheck things, yes, but that's safety first.

I keep running into problems with certain Windows updates, mostly the "Security Updates for Windows 7 for x64-based systems." After what seems like a normal update, as it shuts down it configures the updates to 30%, it restarts. When it starts back up, it stalls on 72%, then goes up to 85% and it gives me this error message: "Failure Configuring Windows Updates. Reverting Changes. Do not turn off your computer." Afterwards, it restarts once and gives the same error code and restarts again, allowing me to use Windows without that update installed. Not all updates give me this error and some are successful, but it's still common.

I've done some basic troubleshooting like running Windows troubleshooter applications, restarting the computer, trying the updates in a clean boot state, but none have worked so far. I've also had problems regarding lag in games and completely dropping connections at times, which I have not had on Linux Mint (not sure if that's related).

I'm dual booting Windows 7 and Linux Mint. It's a second-hand computer, so I didn't have any install disks directly from any manufacturer, so I downloaded one that was linked on the side of /r/microsoftsoftwareswap, burned it to a DVD, and installed it. It appears that Microsoft dropped their support for the Windows 7 Pro ISO and I didn't want to go through a torrent client, so that was the option I came up with. The Windows 7 license that I'm using is genuine. Linux Mint works fine on the machine and Windows is the only one I've had problems with. The system's specs are:

  • Windows 7 Pro x64
  • Core 2 Duo E7600
  • 4GB of RAM
  • EVGA GT 730
  • 320W Stock HP PSU
  • A 250GB HDD with Linux Mint
  • A 1TB HDD with 850GB for Windows and 150GB shared between Linux and Windows

This was a prebuilt from HP that I put a GT 730 and 1TB HDD in.

I don't know what to do from here, so I'm looking for advice. Maybe I should redownload the ISO (from the same source?), make another bootable disk and start from there? I could also sign up for the technical preview of Windows 10 (or just wait for Windows 10 altogether), if getting an ISO directly from Microsoft is a better option. Please ask me if any more information is needed! I'm pretty new with Windows (worked mostly with Linux and OSX before), so the most obvious solutions may be completely foreign to me. Thank you!

Go to the event viewer and see what the actual error is.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

I would reinstall and be more careful doing Windows updates. Doing hundreds of updates can do things that are bad.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

I'm not sure if this is the information you need, but the error that was with the update today was errorCode: 0x80004005, but I've also gotten errorCode: 0x800f0902, errorCode: 0x80242016, and errorCode: 0x80070643.

If they all have a similar easy solution I can do that. Otherwise, do you think it would be worthwhile to just reinstall in some way? Thank you for the response!

I'd just do a clean install and be done with it

You think I should go with Windows 7 or Windows 10 preview?

Windows 7 will be much more stable. I would just go with 7.
