I got a gtx 280 from my uncle about a month ago, it has been intensely used for a few years; when I first got it the temperatures were a little bit abnormal, idle was about 65C-70C and while playing games like skyrim and dark souls with medium settings it would get between 90-95C. The games would continuously flash and tear and eventually freeze and i would get a black screen. Lowering settings does not change it. But today the card started getting between 112-117C so there has to be something wrong. I've taken it apart and cleaned it and replaced the thermal paste and pads, I need help diagnosing the problem and maybe find solutions. It's probably dead but I can't get a new card for a while so i thought i can try to fix it.

Did you apply too much thermal paste when you replaced it? Too much thermal paste will insulate the GPU and result in higher temperatures

90c is certainly not unheard of for an old GTX 280, those things power/heat output could make a Radeon 290 blush...

Definitely something off with those other numbers though.

Do not  as I  do, and  not  as I say. Instead do as you may..

Sounds like blockage in heatsink, my gtx 285 only got 33 / 40c idle temps 70c load temps though that was with fan cranked up all the way to 100% all the time, gtx 285 fan was't that noisy so did't bother me.

If did everything still issues perhaps its just dieng you could try the oven trick to fix it.

I've taken it apart and removed any unwanted dust and stuff from the heatsink, It's probably just dying so i've pretty much given up.

  • 9 years later...

Don't stick it in the oven.. lol.

Considering the card is 2 days older than dirt, and 9 years ago you said the pads looked done.. did you change the pads?

Maybe a little extra airflow? 280 ran hotter than 285.

Put some good TIM on it and it should be good.

Edit:

Could also be hosed too.

I opened up my step-dad's PC from 2008 and cleaned it out. Even after getting rid of the dust, the GTX 280 was still hitting 105 C under load.

I think post bumpgate GPUs (until revision 2 of the GTX 500 series) had an IHS, since people delided them they wouldn't be soldered so I bet the thermal compound between the GPU die and IHS is dry.
