traders and base building are the biggest differences. i'd say it's easily the best dayz mod

I bought arma 2 complete to play Dayz but shit it impossible to get into a server. Plus there weren't that many servers in total, maybe 20 or so, and none had over 40 players. Plus I wasn't even able to get into a server (normal or dayz) because it would never get past loading the "receiving data" screen. I got Arma 3 instead and installed Epoch (similar to Dayz as Janne said) and there are a ton more servers, a lot having well over 60+ players, some over a 100 players.

 

IMO go arma 3 or possibly the stand alone Dayz, though I have no experience with that and don't know how well it's doing

just FYI, arma 3 isn't easy to learn.. lots of key bindings to memorize. Been playing for a couple hours and still hardly know what i'm doing  :rolleyes:
