So I'm thinking of building a mini-ITX PC soon. After building my first PC with an SSD, I will also be building my second PC with an SSD. However, I'm not entirely sure what drives to go for. What I will be doing is putting the drives I currently have (Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB + Seagate Barracuda 1TB) in the new rig and replace what I have now for better, more reliable drives. The drives I was thinking of are:

Samsung 850 EVO 120GB

WD Black 1TB

Do those drives justify their significant premium over other storage solutions? Can you guys suggest better alternatives?

Also, is there a website that tests the endurance of an SSD? I was reading on http://ssdendurancetest.com/ and thought it was interesting, but their lack of drives leaves me wanting to find out about a range of SSDs.

As a side note, do I need to spend more on a 'reliable' SSD if all that's on it is an OS and a couple of core programs, e.g. Chrome, utilities, etc etc?

I just put a couple 250GB 850 Evo's into my build, they are great, those and intel ones are generally the better SSDs on the market, but if you did want to save money there really isn't anything wrong with getting a crucial BX100 or something the main reason I went with the 850 Evo was just because it looks nicer in my build.

For the HDD the WB Black is mainly for gamers, it will be a bit quicker than the Blue/Green WD, but it will also be louder, people normally find the Blue is a good compromise and is still quick for a HDD and very reliable.

I have the crucial drive ssd and had a 512gb fail on me, granted it had a bit of writes running android builds but only 6 months use.. Currently RMA.. I have 4 Samsung ssd's older than my crucials installed in a few of the computers here at home, have coped a beating and still going strong. I have a WD blue that runs like a champ with my steam/origin/blizzard library

I would be happy with the 850 and the wd black in my own PC's for sure

Shall I get the WD Black? Or go for a cheaper alternative from WD?

Hello there my fellow Captain,

WD Black is a performance-oriented drive that has great read/write speeds, can sustain longer and heavier workloads and harsher environments and has a pretty long 5-year warranty. It is great for a boot drive as well as for demanding applications and games.
Since you are looking at a good and fast SSD, I would suggest downgrading the HDD as you already have fast storage for the demanding applications that require faster access time. I would suggest checking out WD Blue for a 1TB drive: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=GJ38UCand WD Green for larger capacities (if needed) :http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=6x5reW

Oh Captain, My Captain,

Thanks for the help. I'll be going for the WD Blue instead. :)

As a side note, how does the performance of the WD Blue compare to a Seagate Barracuda 1TB?

Well, sadly, I can't really commend on other companies' products so I can't really compare them. I could suggest checking both drives' spec sheets and see the official stats. You can also check online for some comparisons and discussions. :)
Here's the spec sheet of WD Blue: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=emcKZj
