Hey techies,

I've build a PC for my dad out of some parts I had lying around and a new G3258

Specs:

  • MSI Z87-G43
  • Intel Pentium G3258
  • 1x 4GB Corsair DDR3
  • 640GB WD Green drive (I also tried a Toshiba 1TB)
  • Thermaltake 80+ 530w PSU

So now to my actual problem:

I've tried to install Windows8 (64bit Home Premium) on it which works fine, but when the installation is finished the installer says that it needs to restart the PC.
Then I click 'okay' and my screen goes black and nothing happens anymore.
The PC still runs but the screen never turns on again. Also it doest shut down or anything.

Things that I tried:

  • Using only one stick of RAM (thats why it has currently only 4GB)
  • Installation from a USB drive and DvD
  • Different harddrives
  • Resetting CMOS

I also made sure that all cables are connected correctly.

This is really annoying me, cause I wanted to give my dad this PC already last week so he can work on some stuff...

Any ideas? Thanks in advance  :)

Hey Senzelian,

Are you able to get into BIOS without any issues? Did you try swapping the boot order so you have the HDD on the top? Is the PC able to boot without the bootable install drive (DVD or thumb drive)?
I would try that OS version on another PC to see if the problem is with the OS or the computer itself. I would also try installing other OSs to see if the computer is able to boot into a OS at all and possibly test all the parts if they are working correctly.

Do you have any error codes or beeping sounds coming from the motherboard? Do you have all the drivers for the hardware parts for the motherboard and the latest BIOS?

Yes I can get into the BIOS without any problems.

I tried swapping the boot order.

The OS version works. I installed it on my main PC.

I used a thumb drive and the DVD. Both leads to the same problem.

I don't have any error codes or beeping sounds, cause the motherboard doesn't have a display and also not a speaker.

I'll try to update the BIOS.

The thing is, that I cannot even install Windows and that simply because the PC doesn't restart at the right moment when it actually should restart.

All I have to do, is to get this thing to restart and then it should work fine.

I'd call MS's support and ask for some advice on this. Possibly look for a way to attach a speaker to the motherboard and see if there are any error codes coming from it. Updating BIOS is a good idea and might fix the issue.

PS: Great job on the custom 980s :)

I don't think MS can help me here, but it might be worth a try.

Thanks for helping.

PS: Thanks!  :P
