R9 285 or GTX 770?

Made In Canada

For my first build ever, im planning on using one of these cards.  My main question is which is better, but another question is what is the maximum refresh rate the r9 285 has? (my monitor im getting is 144hz which i know is too much for the 770).

According to this chart http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-R9-285-vs-Nvidia-GTX-770/3174vs2174the r9 285 has better texture detail, but the 770 has DSR, how will they compare?  (ignore the price area, they are both 200$ right now)

They trade blows from game to game, they perform similar...but the 770 is slightly more powerful i'd go with that.

i have to agree..OP if possible to put your hands on an R9 280X or HD7970 GPU...those have 3GB of VRAM and are stronger than both the R9 285 AND the GTX770:

R9 380x

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

my worry is that the rendering with the card is not that good compared to the 770, plus the 770 has dsr which is a big YES on my list, even if the 280x has better graphics, it would have to be enough to where dsr could not match.

as you can see..noticeably faster and cost not much more...

The cards will render the games exactly the same...DRS allow to render games at higher resolution and then downsample to your 1080p display but this has a HUGE performance cost...it's not something you use frequently (maybe with old games...)but i think AMD has something that can do that too now...

in canada it's more expensive...let me hunt you down a deal for under 200$.

EDIT: nevermind the cheapest R9 280X is 269$...get that GTX 770 for 200$ it's your best option.

can you answer this other question?  according to this page here under the "specs" category, not much from the top.  It says its maximum refresh rate is 60hz.  Is there anyway (preferably without overclocking) i can get it to be okay to use on a 144hz monitor?

don't worry about that...that is complete bullshit...if you game on lower settings to allow for higher FPS that card can output at 240hz if you have a display that is that fast...you will be able to game at 144hz if the game is not too demanding...they made a mistake on the spec sheet...video cards does not have maximum output frequencies.

HOLY SH!T...OP GET THAT...QUICK!!

EDIT: i see...the hz limitation comes from the DVI or HDMI port...here are the maximum output frequencies but those applies only to HIGHER resolution...if you game at 1080p the HDMI 1 output will reach 144hz no problemo:

VGA (via DVI): 2048x1536 @ 85Hz

DL-DVI-I: 2560 x 1600 @ 60Hz

HDMI 1.4a: 4096x3112 @ 60Hz

Display Port 1.2: 4096x2160 @ 60Hz

now, imagine the price is the same at 200$ which would you advise, the 770 (with DSR and resolution), or 280x (with advanced graphics by 30% of 770)?

also, 150$ for a 280x!?!?  DAM, gotta ask my buddy who has a 260 and wants a upgrade about this
