Need help with Civ 5

So I've been playing Civ 5 for about a year now and while the game is super addictive, I can never seem to keep my gold or happiness out of the red. My citizens are ALWAYS pissed about something. I put the game on normal difficulty and it gives me MAYBE 2-3 luxury sources and somebody like Russia 5-6 luxury sources only for it to tell me "world's happiest civs" Russia (30) you (America) (-10)...How are you supposed to expand your empire if your people are angry overtime you make a new city? And why when I'm attacking someone do my soldiers lose health in an enemy country even when they're not being attacked?

 

I never really knew how to begin or what to do when the game starts to be exact. Sometimes I just focus on my workers, settlers, buildings and religion but completely forget about an army or vice versa. 

 

Can someone give me some tips or strategies please? All the youtube vids I watched went into too much detail that I couldn't really understand.

Civ 5 ultimate strategy:

Send out hundereds of settelers

deploy your city when you see an enemy that is going to kill you

Spam out cities like a madman

Spam out roads like a madman

Shit out your religion, just for fun because it really isnt worth it

Get the right upgrades, like the one that decreases road cost

Profit

My strategy: Get as much science as possible

Raid the fuck out of all but 2 countries

Keep allies until nukes

bombs away

Screw money

Nobody needs happy people

Works every time

Just play a game with a friend who knows how it works. That is how I learned.
