Hi guys, I need your advice:

a store near me is making a deal on an old WD black 1TB (WD1002FAEX) but from what I've read it seems like it is worst than the new ones (that's excepted).

I just need help figuring out if the discount is worth it over the performance lost- so the old WD black is 40€, the new one is  88€. I was also considering the WD green or blue or a Seagate one, all for around 60€.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance! :)

I'm happy with my seagate st1000dm003 only about 50€

Hi there,

A WD1002FAEX , although an older generation is still a WD Black. The only disadvantage to the WD Blue and WD Green is the maximum achievable transfer rate – 150 MB/s for the Blue and Green and 126 MB/s for the Black. But the Black has a Dual processor and five years warranty. WD Green and WD Blue have 2 years.

So on average day-to-day usage will the green/blue be quicker?

Thanks for the effort. From what it seems yours is quite faster. I think I might skip on the deal and buy a recent HDD instead

Honestly, my opinion is to just buy whatever hard drive is cheapest.  The reason is that all hard drives, regardless of whether they are new / old generation, or 5400rpm / 7200rpm, will all perform about the same, within about 15% of each other.

If you really want speed, you want to get an SSD for your OS / apps / games.  Keep whatever mechanical HDD you have for bulk media storage (music, videos, movies, pr0n), where speed doesn't matter.

Trying to decide between which mechanical HDD is faster is like trying to figure out what bicycle is the fastest.  If you really want speed, you don't get a bicycle, you get a car.

SSD vs HDD Direct Comparison - Identical Drive Images | SSD Boots Windows 7 + Load 27 Apps in 1 Minute | 17 Second Boot - POST to Desktop
Razer Blade 14 (2015) | Core i7-4720HQ | 8GB RAM | GeForce 970M | 500GB M.2 SSD | 14.1" 1920x1080 Display | 4.19 lbs
