Probably deadly hard drive issue

DJ_Deedahx

*** BEFORE READING, here's my hard drive: Hitachi HTS545050A7E380 (Travelstar Z7K500, 5400 RPM, 2.5", owned since December 25, 2012) // OS: Windows 8.0 ***

Could someone please explain?

Randomly, out of nowhere, I hear my computer making noise and I see this message: "Windows detected a hard disk problem." First thing I do, backup everything I need onto my external drive.

I ran chkdsk and it says there are NO errors on my hard drive!

Now looking at CrystalDiskInfo, I see that my hard disk health is at "Caution", and C5 (Current Pending Sector Count) has a yellow icon before it.

It only has a 1 year of run time on it, it might be going slowly. You did the right thing running bench marks and test on it tho. Have you tried defraging it? I would also say a hard drive running at 44c is hotter than mine. Is it in a laptop?

@Luc401: Yep. It is in a laptop.

It's probably just dying. Laptop drives are subject to conditions desktop drives are not, and so it could very well just be dying.

If you ran checks, and got errors, it's probably the SMART system warning of failure.

Probably just need to get a new drive.

Source: I worked in a repair shop for several years, and routinely replaced drives barely over a year old in laptops. At 3 years, its out of warranty and probably just going bad - is common.

Hi there @DJ_Deedahx!

When the drive detects an error during a write operation it can immediately remap to a sector reserved for this purpose. No data is lost. But if the error occurs during a read operation the drive cannot remap the sector because it doesn't know what the data is supposed to be. The drive makes a not of these and will remap them when or if the sector is later written to or if it can be successfully read. The "Pending Sector Count" is the count of these pending sectors, and the Current Pending Sectors are active visible bad sectors that cannot be read but are still visible to the operating system, and these are dangerous and can cause a lot of problems.

Since the program is giving you a caution warning, I would suggest to make a backup of your important data and look for a replacement HDD.

Hope this helps.

Cheers! :)
