Good day,

I built my first gaming PC today, however I've been having a few problems with the temperature of the graphics card. (Specs: i7-4790k, Carbide 200R Case by Corsair, and a GTX 560Ti Amp which hasn't been used in a year, as its my friends old graphics card and I am temporarily using it until I can afford a proper graphics card.)

The GPU used to run at around 960 MHZ (Core clock) resulting it to run at 60°C. While playing Counterstrike:GO, the GPU would heat up to 80-90°C, causing my computer to crash once.

I've now underclocked it to 700 MHZ where it runs at around 40°C, even while having CS:GO open but not actively playing the game.

Will this affect the GPU at all? Would you advise me to take further steps? Possibly removing the old thermal paste (as the GPU hasn't been used in a year)?

Thanks for the help.

(PS: The CPU is about 60°C warm at all times)

Update: GPU running at 905 MHZ while being around 50°C

Is it dusty? Get a air spray and dust out the card, you can also change the thermal paste if you want.

When changing thermal paste, do you know if there's an alternative to alcohol? I don't seem to have any rubbing alcohol at home and I'm not sure if I can get them at the store.

I used Surgical spirits - the bottle I found was 95% alcohol for around £1.30/1.50. Pharmacies or supermarkets should have them around the first aid section for cleaning cuts etc.

At worst you can use a lint free cloth and lightly dampen it - it'll just take longer (a lot). You may not get off all the residue this way but it should suffice in a pinch.

Alright thanks.

I've taken the GPU out of the case now and was wondering which screws I had to open? So far I've taken away the 4 main ones.

The four you've taken off will be for the gpu heat sink - I'm not 100% sure which screws hold the shroud assembly in - at a guess from mine I'd say all the black screws apart from the two between the silver screws you already took off (closest to the gpu block).

If a little wiggle doesn't move it off you'll likely have to take those last two off also.
