Windows On New System

Go to solution Solved by techarmyhd,

Did you swap the hard drive into a new system, or is this the same system and for some reason you have to reactivate it?

The hard drive was originally in my hp all in one PC. I then removed it to put it into my new custom built pc and re-installed windows, and the product key wouldn't activate. So i tried the call to activate feature and followed the automated process and my PC was activated after typing in the special code that was provided.

So yes i swapped the hard drive into a new system.

I've heard that when you transfer a hard drive with windows on it to a new system with a different motherboard that windows will become illegitimate, is this true? Also, I've heard that when this happens you can contact Microsoft and get it re-certified, is this also true?

Yes that is true, it will become invalid.

and yes you can call microsoft and have it validated.

I've also heard that you can only validate it if it was due to system repair or something, not just trying to use it on a different computer, is that true?

If you're trying to transfer an OEM key you simply can't. If it's a full retail key you're fine you just have to de-activate the key on the other system.
