Add network printer on OS X

Go to solution Solved by Blake,

I was able to connect by using my Microsoft account credentials. I then saw my printer and added it, but I can't print anything. I opened up the print queue and saw "hold for authentication" beside the test page I was trying to print.

I found this support page on the subject. Apparently I need a fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for the printer.

I ran into this issue when the printer was hooked up to my NAS (named dlink-backup). As far as I remember, I resolved this by adding the printer as a "Windows printer via spoolss" and using a URL of the form smb://username:password@dlink-backup/lp. I tried a similar approach now, but my username is an email address because of my Microsoft account so I think the @ symbol is problematic.

Do you see any way around this using the FQDN? How do I set that up?

1. Support page is for AD, sounds like your not in an AD environment.

2. When you add the printer specify the user as a user on the remote windows box. e.g. \\winpc\username when you log into the windows system open up a cmd prompt and type hostname to find the name of the system, and whoami to find the username.

I have a printer hooked up to a Windows 8.1 computer and have printer sharing enabled under the HomeGroup settings.

I went to the Printers & Scanners preference pane on OS X, clicked the + sign, chose the Windows tab, then selected the aforementioned Windows 8.1 PC. Now I'm prompted to connect to the print server as either a guest or a registered user. Connecting as a guest doesn't work and I don't know what name or password to use when trying as a registered user. Any ideas?

Heyyo,

Yeah Windows file and printer sharing require a password so sometimes if you can't share files and such? Create a Windows user password. Windows 8.1 should be your username and email if you have it bound to a Microsoft account.

1. Support page is for AD, sounds like your not in an AD environment.

2. When you add the printer specify the user as a user on the remote windows box. e.g. \\winpc\username when you log into the windows system open up a cmd prompt and type hostname to find the name of the system, and whoami to find the username.

Using the username given by whoami worked! Thanks.
