From a gaming point of view it's not worth it not to sure how much of an increase there will be to work production.

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

Intel announced less than 20%.

I have amassed quite a bit if money and I am planning on building a 2k ultra gaming pc/workstation. But I was wondering if I should hold off and wait for the release of skylake.

Planned Specs (no partpicker cause I'm on my phone)

I7 5930k

980ti

1 1440p

2 1080p <- not for gaming

Skylake-E will release only by the end of 2016. But I would get a 5820k, unless you plan buying another 980 Ti and a M.2 SSD, or any PCI-E card, like a blackmagic or something. Besides that, go for it.

Even the z97 chips can handle SLI. @MineRaid The 5930k has terrible Value if you can't utilize all these PCI lanes, the 5820k is more than enough for gaming x99, though it's not reccomended unless you do production work. You are better with z97 and 4690k if you are only gaming, otherwise 4790k and z97 if you do some lightweight productivity.

If you intend to stick with Intel "High End Desktop" cpu, there is little point in waiting on Skylake. Skylake-E may make its appearance as early as Q3 2016. The release of Broadwell-E may have happened by the end of Q4 2015, but there are rumors that it will not happen at all.

Will the lower clock speed affect gaming performance?

100MHz is not a big differential. Besides, both cpu can be overclocked and one cannot really predict the ceiling of any given chip.

1440p direct (if my Internet can handle it)

If not I'll be down-scaling to 1080p.

All renders are going to start with 1440p video.

Then go with x99 and the 5820K, it the exact same processor as the 5930k but with less PCI Lanes, which you propably won't be using.

Here is a vid on what are PCI lanes and what they are used for.

No. But, if you are going for an unlocked CPU and x99 you OWE it to yourself to overclock that CPU.

"Gets $300 cpu, has no idea how to overclock let alone do anything but build the pc. (Honestly I have no clue what to do in between [building the thing] and [using the thing] )

Not a problem. Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte have good automatic oc. Just tell the system to oc and how aggressive to be. Will not be the best, but will be decent.
