I feel like a born again noob here but I am having problems with my local connection speeds. Transferring files from one computer to another is very slow, like 8-10 megabytes/sec slow. This transfer is being done between my main pc (wireless with Linksys WUSB6300 adapter) and my laptop (asus ux305) I have connected the laptop directly to the router and wireless with same results. Now the strange part is my connection to the outside world has no issues and is actually faster... I get more then my advertised down and up speed(~15megabyte down ~1.4megabyte up) I have tried both windows homegroup and regular filesharing with similar results. I have even connected the computer and laptop to a separate 5ghz band then everything else with the same result, I am very stumped...

setup:

Router: Netgear Nighthawk r8000

server pc: linksys WUSB6300 wireless adapter windows 7 pro

laptop: asus ux305 windows 8

other devices: 1 wired, 10-20 wireless at any given time

I think....

Your internet speed is a lot slower

Speedtest.net will show megabit not megabyte. 1megabyte MB = 8 Megabit Mb

So 15Mb = ~2MB

Your internal speed is probably limited by one of your devices being connected by 2.4ghz not 5ghz or by range

I'd test both devices hard wired first then...

Remember to copy a file between PCs you need both download and upload

Some types of wireless are async

That is a worse case scenario test since I will have to shut down everything to bring the router to my desktop for testing. The desktop is about 15 feet away but those 15 feet put it on the second story of the house lol. But I did do one wired to try and eliminate both of them congesting the wireless.

I believe I have found the week point, I setup a spare router I had to do some testing. Both hardwired in I got about 85-90MB/s which is very acceptable since my drives max out about 100 transferring to each other locally. If put the laptop on wireless it can still pull 70-80MB/s. Now once I put the desktop on wifi (now 1ft from router in question) speed drops to ~20MB/s and is very erratic so I guess it is the upstream on the USB dongle giving me the problems. anyone have any recommendations on a good dongle or pci card? I am looking for personal experiences if anyone has any with similar workloads?
