Hi, I'm building my first rig over this summer and am in need of a monitor for later use (for now to save money immediately, I'll be using my 1080p HDTV with a 60Hz refresh rate). But I wanted to know what monitor would be best by the specification that I was looking for.

(Of course if a monitor without some of these is found for a great value I'll definitely consider it, I just wanted some experienced foresight into this instead of just randomly poking around for what I saw)

I would like a monitor that runs at 1440p (I will take 1080p also if the deal is much better), 144Hz (mandatory), 1-2ms response time, G-Sync (mandatory), and as low of a input lag as possible.

I hope I don't sound picky but If you guys could help me find a monitor that suits (at least most of) my needs, I would be forever grateful. [emoji2] [emoji2]

P.S. This is my preferred setup so you guys know what I plan to work with:

Why do you want such a high speced monitor? xD it's pretty simple just look for a decent brand with what you want, also get a 4690K if it's only gaming

CPU: i5-4690K @ 4.0GHz GPU: Gigabyte Gtx 970 WindForce MOBO: Gigabyte Z97 Gaming-3 CASE: Corsair Carbide 200R PSU: Corsair RM750

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 4GBx4  MOUSE: CM Mizar KEYBOARD: Logitec G110

The 1440p is negotiable, if I can get much better resolution for a just a bump in price, then why not, I want this monitor to last. Not to just be content with it for a year and then decide I want to shell out more money to get a brand new one. That's also why a lot of my internal specs are higher than I initially anticipated, I want to be able t use what I have for 2 years at least without having to worry or feel the true 'need' to upgrade. The g-sync because I have a nice Maxwell-series chipset, I want to fully utilize what it can offer in terms of a better performance. 144hz because I've heard nothing but raving reviews from that level of refresh rate; yes I know, you don't need and 60 can work just fine, but again, I don't what to 8 months down the road and displeased with my choices.

But like I said, if you can present a solid monitor and stand behind it and it doesn't have all of these extravagant features, then please show me.

In your guys' opinion, is the 1440p worth it at this juncture in PC gaming? I see more and more people switching to the higher resolution compared to the now standard 1080p. I have no problem with 1080, but was curious if you saw things pushing towards the higher side in the near future

Everything seems to be going to 4k (2160p), with 1440p, and the more uncommon 1600p (16:10 aspect ratio) being the next step up from 1080p. A gtx980ti seems like overkill for a 1080p monitor, IMO.

Then do you think it would be worth waiting a little bit longer to earn up the cash for a 1440p monitor? I have my TV to tide me over, and it's necessarily a bad one, but of course a TV is true substitute for a gaming monitor.

I think it would be worth it yes, but it's really up to you and your budget constraints. If you look for some monitors with TN panels you can probably find some cheaper 1440p ones with G-Sync support that dont cost as much as the one I referenced.

What again would be the main differences between IPS and TN panels? Specifically from a gamer/graphics editor's standpoint?

The most obvious differences for the IPS panel will be the increased viewing angle, the lack of color shift at odd angles, and the more vivid and accurate color reproduction that they are capable of. Response times will be behind TN panels however. Gamers use both types of panels, while any graphics editor who does professional work will generally use IPS displays for accurate color reproduction.
