i got a asus z97 pro wifi, and when i boot, not everytime, it will hang on post code 64 for up to 5 mins before booting into windows, it may restart itself once or do other things, why is this? ill try get a video but when i go to try it boots normally

The ASUS motherboard manual lists all post codes and what they mean. A code 64 is normally when its trying to identify a USB storage device and work out if its bootable, though without knowing your hardware I can't be sure.

If there is an option to disable boot from USB I'd do that personally, I tend to enable USB boot only when I want it because I have a really bad habit of leaving mem sticks in my PC. My work PC you can't turn it off and USB is always higher priority than HDD so if you leave a usb device in when you hit the power it won't boot :(

Boot priority.

You normally have three options

Option one normally defaults to a USB / DVD drive

Option two is HDD / SSD

Option three is blank.

It should be

Option one SSD / HDD

Option two blank

Option three blank

Then go into specific drive boot priority's

You will have one for the HDD / SSD. The boot should be the only one picked.

The rest leave blank.

That's how it should always be. If you ever need to boot from a USB / DVD or anything else because you're formatting or dual booting then hold F8 when you push the power button. You will get a window asking what you want to boot from.

Unplug all USBs when you're booting up.

It's not a race to the bottom.

anyone else able to help me out?

Okay shooting into the dark now,

You've done boot device priority.

Remove front panel USBs, and Keyboard & mouse (you can plug the KB back in later on as it's not PS2)

Remove the SSD/HDD. Just unplug the sata power cables. (To see if it still hangs)

Update bios within the bios (not windows).

It's not a race to the bottom.

Ah, so it's very rare?

Have you got a different SSD/HDD you can boot off that ain't already in the system?

Or, if you want to, even though it will also annoy me, unplug the drive before every boot for a month or so. If it doesn't hang then plug the drive back in and press Alt + Ctrl + Delete. (it will restart the system) Or you could just allow it to go into bios. Most motherboards will now go into bios automatically if no boot device is found. When in bios just press ESC to boot normally after you've plugged your drives back in.

That is a very annoying way to find the problem, but I do think it's a boot problem. There's some kind of incompatibility somewhere.

It's not a race to the bottom.

after post 64 sometimes it restarts and today it was also hanging on post 'AE'

Ok after reading your manual (I'm guessing it's correct) http://images10.newegg.com/UploadFilesForNewegg/itemintelligence/ASUS/E9062_Z97_PRO1401383332300.pdf

Error code 64 lies within an error named "cpu dxe initialization" which seems to relate to the CPU accessing memory. Or something like that.

Error code AE is an error named "legacy boot event" which after a 3.2345345ms of Goggling (so could be wrong) has something related to not finding a boot device.

It's not a race to the bottom.
