Hey Guys.

I am considering re-building the hdd drive setup I have in my computer. Right now I am using a the Seagate momentus hybrid drive (500 gb) as my system drive. This is also the drive I have Steam and all of my games installed on.

I have an old (8 or 9 years) 250 gb harddrive I got from my first computer (Medion) as a storage/backup drive. I do have backup of my important stuff on an external drive and in the cloud. Last I have some Seagate 500 gb drive that I keep a backup of all my Steam games on so that I don't have to download them all over and over again.

Now - I am thinking about upgrading my storage solution since it is pretty ghetto, and 2/3 of my drive are very old.

First my specs:

CPU: I7 2600k @ 4,7 giggahertz under water.

GPU: HD6950 unlocked BIOS with some big air cooler. GTX 780 is coming.

MOBO: ASUS P8Z68-V Pro

PSU: Corsair 650W

Case: SilerStone TJ-something. I think it is 10.

I have bought a 900D and am rebuilding my system. Right now the plans are to do a totally overkill water cooling loop because I can, and getting a GTX780 to put under water.

I am not planning to upgrade my CPU because I really don't need it. I use my computer for gaming and programming and very little 3D rendering while I am designing a water block with a friend of mine who is an engineering student.

Also I was watching the WAN show yesterday, and Linus answered a Twitter question where he probably would'nt upgrade from Sandy to Hasswell.

Now that was a lot of blah.

My real question is regarding my new storage solution. First of all I was thinking about getting two SSDs and putting them in RAID0 for speeding it up, and because I really would'nt care if one of them dies other than the inconvenience.

All though I am in doubt how much storage is needed. I am gessing I can get around with 256 gb in all, since I don't really use that much space other than for my games. I would then get 2 x 1 TB WD Black (since I believe these are the performance spec drives?) in RAID0 to install my games on. Although I was thinking if I would get more performance from buying another Momentus hybrid drive and putting them in RAID0? What are you guy's thoughts?

Also which SSDs should I go for? I have my eye on some Sandisk Extreme SSDs since they are so cheap, and I love not spending money when I can avoid it.

I know that Linus is some kind of sponsored by WD so is there any way I can give him credit when I buy the drives? I live en Denmark.

Thanks in advance,

Get a single Samsung 840 250GB instead of a raid.

The speed difference other than those in synthetic benchmarks is negligible.

Yes, the WD Caviar blacks are performance oriented drives. No need for them since you have an ssd though. If you really want loading speed, 2 seagate barracudas in raid 0 will do the job almost just as well for less.

Why the 840 instead of a SanDisk?

And I won't have enough room on the SSD for my games, therefor the blacks.

So you mean I would'nt be able to notice the difference between one SSD and two in RAID?

I'm pretty sure the 840 (non pro) 250GB is cheaper. Get whichever is cheaper.

The Seagate barracudas should be quite a bit cheaper and the performance isn't that far off.

You won't be able to tell the difference unless they were low performing ssds. (which these are not)

They are actually pretty much the same price. Although the SanDisk has more than double the write speeds. Will that matter?

It's not that write speeds don't matter but the quality of the memory controller and the random read speed are the two most important factors in what makes an ssd feel fast.

Edit: But really? The Sandisk extreme is cheaper?

Here they are like 20$ apart, so it doesn't matter.

If you're talking about the sandisk extreme 2 and it's cheaper than the Samsung 840, get it.

Otherwise, get the 840. The 840 performs better than the extreme 1.
