Please excuse me if this is posted in the wrong section..

Hey all. Been a dedicated follower of the linus channel and all of his stuff and had a forum account for a while now.

I have a problem when tying to record video for a montage I am putting together.. I use fraps to record just because it is the easiest to use and I have it installed already. What happens is over time my frames start to drop and I cannot record because of the graphics lag that is caused. I am running at a normal 122 fps without recording and I lock my framerate to 60 when recording, but when it dips below, it starts to lag.

Build info:

Gigabyte z77x ud3h motherboard

Intel i5 3570k (stock speed, no need to OC just yet.)

PNY GTX 670 (stock speed as well.)

8gigs of G.SKILL RipJaws @ 1600 MHz

WD Blue 500GB (not sure it matters, but I will put it anyways)

Monitor refresh rate is 60 Hertz

Any help is appreciated.

It may be due to fraps requiring a large amount of cpu and gpu usage to encode and create the video files.

I don't have much experience with fraps. I used it long enough to realize how poor it truly is with resources. I've used Dxtory for a very long time now and find it works much smoother and gives endless customization to your recordings.

Give http://dxtory.com/v2-home-en.html a try and see if you continue to get lag spikes while recording. Beware though, Dxtory can use a lot of hdd space based on the settings you choose. It will also run smoother if you have multiple hdd's installed as it's capable of distributing across multiple drives.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

what resolution are you recording at and are you trying to write to that HDD?

HDD is normally the biggest problem with software recording. I wouldn't expect you to record 1080p on a HDD at 60fps.

as said above to record smoothly you either need a separate fast HDD for recording,or an SSD,because recording 1080p needs high write speeds.
