This problem seems to happen after I reboot my computer sometimes, the volume icon will just not be there when it starts up, and will be greyed out in the system icons, why does this happen? could it have anything to do with me making my computer sleep most of the time and only restarting every couple days or so?

Its probably because your sleeping it, the audio service isn't re-starting on wake properly. I don't trust sleep mode any more and almost never use it as it has always had issues with some drivers/services not correctly detecting the sleep/wake.

but it doesn't do it on sleep or wake, only when fully shut down and then booted back up, and not very often either, just annoying that i have to restart a second time to fix it, so i was hoping to find out what the issue could be.

Sorry I miss read when the problem occurs, can you check the event viewer next time it happens see if there is anything about the Windows Audio service.
