Hi Folks :)

I'm looking to build a Home server for Web Hosting running mostly Ecommerce sites using Magento. I wanted to ask about the Apple OS-X Server, I tried searching youtube but only come aross builds for Home sharing and only see talk about the free Nas program.

I'm a Newbie dealing with Servers but can't see spending the $$$ for Rack space per site and rather have my own server. I've been a windows user since 95 untill currently ending with windows 7. I Need a simple to understand program and was thinking OS-X as we recently swtiched all the computers to Mac.

See I'm not understanding the Hardware vs Software, Mac os doesn't typical run on normal motherboards unless you hackintosh everything, So how can buying the OS Server software work?

I'm honeslty lost on building the server and also the security.

Was thinking useing 45 Drives

www.45drives.com/

hope some knowledgeable people can help.

Thank you

KG

You'd probably be better off having 2 seperate servers imo.

Your storage pod running Solaris or Linux to setup/configure/manage your datastores on.

An application server running OS-X Server for application deployment, domain/ad setup, or whatever you want thats apple specific.

The mac mini's were a popular OS-X server - they still come with Yosemite which you can upgrade to Server.

You really don't want to be "hacking" a server together - you could have all sorts of issues around configuration changes, and not be able to find any resources to help you.

Apple has all but abandoned the business/enterprise market, I would avoid using anything apple related for anything business/corporate/enterprise until they prove that they do actually care about these environments.

OS X Server is just an App you download from the mac app store, any version of OS X since 10.7 can run it.

As your doing webdev I would recommend a Linux Server.
