With windows 10 around the corner Im intending to get myself an SSD to make things better, and reformat my Hard drive to get rid of the boot partition etc. And clean it up in general.

But my question is this, if I'm wanting to install the new OS on the SSD will windows have a hissy fit because it is an upgrade from windows 7?

I was thinking that maybe I could do some kind of cloning of my boot partition to the SSD and boot from that to format the hard drive and then upgrade it? I figure this should be possible but I simply dont know how.

Any advice on how to do this or alternative methods would be appreciated :)

While it's possible to clone Windows across, I find that going from HDD to SSD can cause problems when you transfer. I would suggest doing a clean install of Windows 7 on the SSD, then doing the upgrade to Windows 10 when it releases (or, you may want to wait for the first patches to come around, where any issues with upgrading should be fixed).
