mobo ram limit?

so im just curious why do manufactures limit how much RAM is allowed on some motherboards. the thing im talking about is my dads old Packard bell desktop i wanted to upgrade the ram in it so i went to crustal memory and ran the test to see what RAM it took and it said DDR3 ... but it said the MAX was 3GB why is this surly i can stick 8GB in it right..

Because at the time there were no 8GB sticks.

You could but it wouldn't be fully used. The CPU and operating system architecture both impose physical and logical limits of the maximum amount of RAM that the system will take.

its an intel core 2 quad Q8300 i would have thought it would support more that 3GB right?

The os or motherboard might not, though.

i guess its the mobo then because it came with windows 7 64bit.

why do they limit it to 3GB though

Current gen consumer desktop mobos are limited to 32gb, thats 8gb per slot. Which happens to be max capacity sticks available. So when that mobo has come to market max capacity has been something like 2gb per stick. Two slots -> 4gb max. Idk why it would be 3gb. Could be because its cheap OEM piece.
