I already have a 980 and 1080p monitor was planning to upgrade to a 1440p panel do you guys think its better to just buy another 980 or go for 980ti? Thanks for your time!

a 980 is more than enough for 1440p. Don't spend money if you don't need to

so a single 980 is enough?

It is enough, but if you want to be able to push games at higher refresh rates (144 Hz) I would recommend 2 980's. But if you are just using a 60 Hz monitor, you will not really need more than 1 980.

For a single 1440p panel? Yes absolutely. Anyway in a worst case scenario, get the screen and try it with your current card. If you're not happy then revisit the question of SLI vs 980Ti. You lose absolutely nothing that way.

It is quite possible and likely
