Compact productivity PC

Go to solution Solved by nims0c,

Decided to go with this:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($134.98 @ DirectCanada)
Motherboard: ASRock H97M-ITX/AC Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($109.50 @ Vuugo)
Storage: Sandisk Ultra II 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive  ($73.95 @ Vuugo)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32/64-bit)  ($107.92 @ shopRBC)
Other: Silverstone SG13 ($45.46)
Total: $601.78

I'm planning to build a computer for my parents. It will be used for productivity (Word, Excel, email, etc.), web browsing, and video streaming.

Here's what I came up with:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($134.98 @ DirectCanada)
Motherboard: ASRock H97M-ITX/AC Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($109.50 @ Vuugo)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($68.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32/64-bit)  ($107.92 @ shopRBC)
Other: Silverstone SG13 ($45.57)
Total: $598.69

Comments:
-I chose the cheapest i3 at the moment
-I want a small build so I chose a mini ITX board with WiFi
-might as well get 8 GB of RAM
-not sure between Samsung 850 EVO, Crucial M500, Kingston HyperX 3K, and Intel 530, or should I just save myself $20 and get the cheapest 120/128 GB SSD available?
-not sure about the PSU, I just want something 80+ bronze and semi/fully modular
-I don't think there's anything quite as small as the SG13 at the same price point, so I'm pretty much sold on it
-prices are in CAD

What do you think?

Unfortunately, the 250 GB version is more like $150 CAD lol. $88 for the 120 GB model.

If you want to go even smaller your could always go with a Zbox or a NUC and throw an SSD in it.

I'll look into that. Thanks.

Only thing i recommend is bigger ssd like the 250gb like he mentioned. Also maybe a little higher cpu since no gpu is in it.

I don't think my parents will have too many files. Plus, we have a NAS. I figured I'd save some money here since I think I can get away with it.

And by higher CPU do you mean an i5?

This is tje cpu i recommend for your budget it is just a little better on the graphics side.https://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646i34370

Or a gpu like https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-01gp43742krand back down on cpu. It really depends on display.

Oh ya, I forgot to mention it'll be driving a 1680x1050 display.
