Hey Guys!

So apparently my 760 doesnt cut it anymore, so I decided to purchase a 970 but I've few concerns:

- Is the G1 better than the FTW?

- Is there anyway to avoid coil whine? I really dont want a chidori inside my case.

- My current PSU is a CX600 ( I know is not the best ) will it handle the 970?

- If the G1 is better, does it come in a sturdy packaging? ( it will get shipped overseas ) same question goes for the FTW if its better.

Thanks alot for taking your time and help me with my inquiries.

Rest of system specs just in case:

mobo: Asus h97 plus

cpu: E3-1231 v3

ram: 8gb ddr3 1333

cooler: Hyper evo 212

hdd: caviar blue 1tb 7200 ( yes no SSD, dont judge me ).

monitor: 1680x1050 ( yeah I know, overkill )

I thought this was gonna be about the vramgate so I could bitch about nvidia. :( maybe next time

/s

1. G1 is one of the better 970s, cooler is more beefy

2. Nope, Asus strix 970 gets it a lot but unless you test the GPU with your PSU, there is no way to know

3. Should be able to

4. Packaging should be good for both cards.

Lets all ripperoni in pepperoni

As a owner of the G1 i can say mine doesn't coil whine but I have a CoolerMaster V700 (pretty good PSU). Also the G1 has a slightly higher boost clock but not by much. In the end it comes down to what you want.

I bought the Superclocked with the ACX 2.0 cooler, which is very similar to the FTW. I haven't heard any coil whine since I was on Windows 8 (on 7 currently). I'd say go with the EVGA 970 because the G1 has a tendency to have more coil whine. Also, I have a 500 watt PSU and it powers my 970 just fine.

PC: Ryzen 2600X, EVGA 1080 DT, Gigabyte X470 Aorus Gaming 5 WiFi, Corsair 2x8GB DDR4 3000Mhz, EVGA SuperNOVA G2 750W 80+ Gold, Phanteks  Enthoo EVOLV ATX

Peripherals: Logitech G502 HERO, Cooler Master ML510, Corsair K68 Cherry MX Red, Dell S2417DG YNY1D 24" 165HZ G-Sync 1440p, Acer XF251Q,

Audio: AKG K7XX, JBL SLR308 MKI, Scarlett 2i4 (2nd Gen), Sony MDR-7506, Shure SE-215, Audio-Technica AT2020
Server: Dell Poweredge T420 running ESXi, Hosting Plex and Automation services and misc. game servers; 2x Xeon E5-2400, 32GB ECC Memory, ~40TB Storage (Mix of SSDs and HDDs)
Network: Asus RT-AC3100 (Current), Supermicro running pfsense, 10/100/1000/10000 Netgear Switch

Why are you shipping overseas ?

Your psu will be fine .

And I would upgrade your monitor lol

Because I am not in the states atm and wont be for quite a while T_T. Yeah my old faithful monitor will be replaced after I get the 970.

I just reallly dont wanna have to buy a supernova, rm or v series psu, since some people say coil whine might be caused by the psu aswell.

Yeah I was looking at EVGA's cuz so far I've bought 2 cards from them and none of them gave me troubles but I've never tried Gigabyte even thou the G1 looks so overbuilt and sexy.

The ftw+ would be a better comparison to the g1 hell the ssc is better then the original ftw.

As for the evga packaging, the ship their ssc in a plastic shell, but it is very secure in it and the cover all the connections. Should be fine for shipping.

Your psu should be fine. As for coil whine, I have 0 coil whine with mine. However I've seen people change a power supply which introduced coil whine to the graphics card. Weird as hell to be sure

My rig:
