i3-4160

Go to solution Solved by Kyuubixchidori,

ok so i'm going to be doing my first build as soon as i can find a motherboard that will support this processor. but most manufactures don't have it listed on the supported cpu chart i think the only Z97 i could find that says on the site it supports is the msi gaming 5 but does that mean that that's my only choice?

Also if its not the case where it'll wok on almost most lga 1150 boards is there any the stand out as really good boards around the 150$ price point like between the evga FTW or the asus Z97-a or even msi's kariat edition if u cant tell ive been stuck on this conundrum for a month trying to make sure i get it right and basically all i need the board for is 1080P gaming on high settings for like the next 3 years so ill prob only run 1 gpu and maybe put an i5 to over clock when broad well comes out?

And lastly any recommendations on a GPU is it really worth it to spend 350$ on a gtx 970 or will a gtx 960 do almost as well sense its only gonna be single panel at 1080

hey there! any 1150 socket motherboard will do. Personally, id cut back a bit on motherboard money, you can get buy on a 60$ motherboard no problem, as you will not be overclocking a I3. Id recommend getting the 970, its a big jump from the 960. anything below a 970, its better to go amd with the current pricing. and broadwell is energy efficent more then anything, so dont worry about upgrading your CPU for a while, its better to get a I5 right off the bat if you can. if not a I3 is just fine for gaming.

Just go with a 960, or a 280x.  The 970 is overkill for 1080p imo.

A 960 is fine, with mild settings tweaks it's easily going to run the game 60 FPS.  And it's not like an average of 47 is terrible.

But I tend to make recommendations based on what I think the average gamer wants rather than an enthusiast will want. (because enthusiasts are goofy and have bloated expectations.)

a 960 will definitely do great for 1080p. you may need to drop some settings to hit 60 fps but it is a powerful midrange card. definitely good bang for the buck. another option would be the r9 280X if you are ok with higher power consumption. the 280X will perform better in games.

swo around the 200$ price point a 280x is better would a r9 290 non x be worth the 60$ more?

if you can afford it sure it would be worth it, but the 280x i'd say is the sweet spot for bang for the buck. the r9 290 is more on the level of the 970 in terms of performance but it puts out a lot of power an heat compared to the 280X (also a hot and power hungry card). it all comes down to what you're ok with. if you are ok with spending the extra 60 and don't mind a card that puts out more heat and uses more power, the r9 290 is flat out better than the 960 or 280X. But for 1080p 60 fps gaming, there isn't much need to go with a r9 290 when the r9 280X will handle it quite well for 60.00 less.

Any of these 3 cards will be great for gaming at 1080p. The 280X performs better than the 960 and the 290 performs better than the 280X. It is up to you which one to get, all 3 are great gaming cards.

If you want 60fps at ultra it isn't even enough. I'm having trouble in Witcher 3 and On a few maps of Crysis 3 and games are only going to become more demanding in the future.
