My brother in law is asking me to build a rig for his new job. He got promoted to a Business Financial Specialst, so it requires a lot of spreadsheets and calculations.

With this specific workflow im not sure what parts are overkill or necessary since my area is mostly with video editing and motion graphic rendering. Im assuing an i7 build would be overkill.

He will be doing huge spreadsheets 500mb +, thousands of formula calculations, and a butt load of tabs.

Maybe an i3 build? A little heavy on the ram i assume? Or an i5 with better onboard graphics? He will be using 2-3 monitors as well which i have to include in the price so im wondering if ill need a DVI-splitter or maybe just a cheap dedicated gpu.

Any ideas?

Ive done some research on other forums and they dont offer clear specs. Some say i3's are sufficient and others say i7's are must have. Most of the programs are just google chrome tabs and excel sheets.

Finding a quality PSU under 550w is not impossible but you typically end up paying the same amount. There are more sales of 550w supplies which means it attracts more production and more competition which equates to good pricing. This is why it's more common to find 600w+ now :/

Why don't you get him to use your rig with a typical and max load and monitor the resources used... give you a good mark to start from at least.

It would be really helpful to do that though
