To set the scene, since the moment I built my PC file explorer couldn't search my secondary HDD. It does through the main search programs and files in windows start and honestly I didn't think it was a big deal at the time.

Well it's really annoying me now...

So I did a lot of trouble shooting and trawling through the internet.

All the normal fixes like rebuilding windows index for that drive etc... Has not worked. Or if it did for a second or so xD

Now I suddenly remembered reading somewhere in my trawling that if the drive letter is A or B something doesn't work as those are meant for floppy drives... SO I'm pretty sure it's because of that as my secondary drive has unfortunately got the drive letter A  *ALL THE FACEPALM*  giphy.gif

The other thing is... I would just rename the Drive to something else. But I'm pretty darn sure it will ruin the programs that are installed on the drive... D:

The only thing I can think of to solve the problem would be to uninstall all the programs on the "A" Drive and change the letter to something else then reinstall all the programs back again afterwards...

BUT I really don't want to as I have... Like abazillion programs on it D:

If someone has an incredible fix I haven't thought of... Please do tell

But if not is there a program that can uninstall all the programs on one drive in one click of a button. Or am I screwed and should just start using something like Total Commander? (A alternative file explorer)

I'm so sorry for the long post. But I'm frustrated and it's way too early for this D: AND I WANT TO GET IT FIXED

Any help would be lovely LTT community

Sorry for long post... I've never seen this here but I thought I might start a *sorry for long post here's a potato" thing... But instead use a schnitzel as a ode to @looney so to speak ;)

SO here's a schnitzel xD

Hey,

Drive lettering just ended up as A and B for floppy, C for HDD and D for optical as it was common practice.

I change drive letters for drives every now and then, I have only ever not changed the drive letter for the OS install.

Have you tried setting what is been indexed under indexing options ? (just search for it in run)

Changing the drive letter won't break all programs installed but could cause problems for some. It will break any short-cuts you have set-up.

The very circuitous work around would be, change the drive letter > share the new drive > map A: back to drive as a network drive.

Ok so how would I do that?

In My computer, right click the renamed drive go to properties > Sharing Tabs > advanced sharing > share this drive make note of share name.

(windows 8.1) In my computer, click the computer tab, click "map network drive" > select drive letter (A:) in folder enter \\[YourComputerName]\[shareName] Make sure connect at sign in is ticked so it does this for you each time at boot.

If you need windows 7 instructions let me know and I'll find a windows 7 machine to remind my self where everything is.
