For a headset, I'm using Sennheiser PC 363D, it's quite expensive but it's really good.

For headphone only, I would say that avoid gaming-branded headphones, buy Audio-brand headphones, they usually have higher quality for lower price. Others may have more specific suggestions but Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, AKG, etc... all have quality headphones for even around 100$ and less.

For examples: Sennheiser HD series or Audio-Technica ATH series, they all have models ranging from 50$ to over 200$ (as I can see on Amazon US right now), they'll definitely be better than the Razer Kraken (though I suggest that if you can, try any walk-in audio stores where you can just try on headphones)

PS: If you want the virtual surround, there are plenty of audio cards around for that, it's better than Razer's stuffs (A friend of mine used to use Razer's virtual surround but then he got a surround sound card, definitely sounds better)
