I am going to be sleeving my Corsair 860i when I build my rig, and I am going to be making custom length cables. Should I use the connectors that came with the PSU, or should I buy connectors for $0.75 each so i can return the PSU if anything happens to it? Also, my main question is what type of connector does the PSU use to plug cables into it? Does it use male or female? Also, what does the motherboard/GPU side use?

Female (I know the 860i uses a 14+10 connector, but this is the same concept.)

I like the color scheme of Noctua fans. Deal with it. Forget about the bad memories of the past.

Forget about the bad memories of the past, take the good ones along with you through the present, and look forwards to the good things that will come in the future.

Personally I think that extensions are probably best since 1. It takes less work 2. The PSU can be resold/RMA'd 3. They look better in my opinion since there won't be unwanted emphasis on the (generally) messy wires at the PSU. Modular PSUs typically use a proprietary connector. All of the ones I have seen would require a male connector, but you would also need the correct connector for it to work which probably can't be purchased on its own.

Yeah, but the case I am using (Caselabs S3) has the PSU right under the horizontal motherboard. I want to do custom length cables to shorten it up a whole lot.

If you won't see it, is there really much point in sleeving the whole PSU?  There's enough cable management space in the S3.

What you could do is remove the existing connectors from the cables, and use your own wire, sleeve it, and attach your own pins while keeping the connectors that you can't replace. It's risky though.

I want to have XL windows on both sides of the case, and the XL windows pretty much take up the whole side panel.  >.< I just dont wanna have a messy build! I also love the Lutro0 Customs Sleeving! I wont be sleeving the whole PSU. Just the 24 pin, 8 pin EPS, 6 pin PCI, and 8 pin PCI.

From what I know, only the pinouts change from PSU to PSU. I could be wrong though.

Your best bet would be to purchase a pin remover (Lutro0 sells them), and resleeve the existing cables. I highly doubt you'll find the appropriate connectors for your PSU if you don't reuse the ones you already have. Good luck.

You may be interested in his heatshrinkless plastic-type guide, it's probably the best way to go.

You can use staples as a cheapo pin remover, just bend one of the sides straight, make another and insert one on each side of the cable you want to pull out. If you're sleeving in paracord, I recommend you get something to put over the terminal to avoid snags... I just pulled one right off when I yanked on the paracord to get it off, now I have to buy a terminal and fix it back on...

So here's my plan so far:

Plan 1: Corsair Cable kit - Metallic Graphite. If the S3 will have enough space and wont look sloppy, I will probably hide the unneeded lengths of the cable somewhere.

Plan 2: Go with custom length cables with the connectors that came with the PSU.

Plan 2. The Corsair cable kits have heatshink on them that's unattractive to me. Plus you're purchasing many cables that you won't need and don't have the option to customize the cables to the degree that you would with custom sleeving (you can't use two or more colors on a single cable, and your color choice is limited).

I dont even have experience sleeing cables, let alone heatshrinkless sleeving. I think I might go with heat shrink sleeving until I get then hang of it.

I think a good idea would be to try custom sleeving a cable that isn't required to run the system. You should have another PCI-E cable that, even if you do mess up, won't screw you over and leave you without a computer.

My biggest problem I think Im going to have is with the pinouts and voltages. I might have to buy a PSU cable tester along with my sleeving order.

I think you're being just a slightly over-cautious.  :P Most of the time you'll know if a wire wasn't properly secured just by pulling on it. It's like buying an anti static wrist strap for your first DIY computer, it probably won't help you.

Im not worried about it not being secure, Im worrying about the cables plugging into the wrong hole. Ex, a 3.3V cable plugging into a ground plug. Though I am a bit over cautious about this. :P

Also, can the PET sleeving from Lutro0 be used with heatshrink? On the store it says: You will also find LC Stiff-Line Sleeving in this section which is a custom sleeve made just for heatshrinkless

Oh I see. Why not just label them then?

Could do that, but most of the tape leave residue behind. I could go out and buy painters green tape... :)

Alright. I have settled on Plan 2 (Custom Length cables, might go heat-shrink less.

  • 4 weeks later...

Go heatshrinkless, LC sells all the connectors and wire  and terminals you would need. And I would just make custom cables. This way you have the original set to have and sell off if and when you get to that point.

If you need any help just email or pm.
