So I am considering purchasing an i7 4790k or a i5 4690k for my rig. I have a GTX 970 to go along with them. My rig is purely for gaming and the occasional term paper. Eventually I would like to try gaming at 1440p. What cpu would you guys recommend? Thanks!

i5-4690k is plenty powerful for gaming, Spend the money elsewhere like getting a 980 instead of a 970, or a second 970 or something to do with graphics processing.

The 4690k can handle 2x 980s in SLI no problem. maybe even more. so you have no reason to get an i7-4790k when the CPU is not bottlnecking anything.

i5 put the money into the gpu!

4690K for sure.

True, I could get another GTX 970 and make a kick ass SLI config.

Exactly! You will see 2x the FPS from doing this compared to getting an i7-4790k

examples...

i5-4690k + GTX 970 = 1080p 60fps High settings

i7-4790k + GTX 970 = 1080p 60fps High settings

Both of these will pump out the same results as each other, you aren't going to see an fps gain from having a better CPU because the i5 can already handle what the 970 is putting AND THEN SOME.

And what I mean by "AND THEN SOME" is you can have 2x or even a 3x sli 970 config, and the i5-4690k will handle it.

If you haven't already bought the GPU I recommend i5 with a 980 with the thought of a second 980 in the future if you want to do 1440p gaming at 60+ fps.
