Hello! I am building a new rig and I was wondering if it is essential to have an ssd? I don't mind waiting the extra time for games to load it doesn't bother me much. I'd rather spend the money on a better graphics card. Also, if I add an ssd later down the road is it easy to move my OS to it?

I think you can move the OS by cloning the drive image onto the SSD? I think.

If load times don't bother you and you're not playing Skyrim with a ton of mods, then ignore the SSD for now. If you get a new SSD, I'd just start over with a new install... new OS, new chipset, etc, get it all done in one go.

Fast boot time isn't that big of a deal, especially if your PC is rarely even off... You said it yourself, you're not really bothered by it.

Nope, very few people "need" an ssd (Mainly only people who have to get shit done very quickly like the LTT team :P), its just nice to have/

I would not build anything that doesn't have one unless you're spending less than 500 bucks. It does a lot more than speeding up boot times.

this^^^ SSD'S are amazing.

My sdd came with Acronis True Image. So i just copied whole OS drive over. Took less than 1h. After that pc updated/installed? correct drivers, restarted and that was it. Very easy.

As for if it's worth it. For gaming - no (although its nice to be able to load faster into multiplayer games and choose before others from limited classes, like i do in Insurgency xD). But if you use your pc for more than games - absolutely. It will make even a slow CPU feel a lot faster. I dont know of any other single upgrade that is more noticeable in how your pc performs.

How do I install a fresh OS if the key is only a one time use

i never heard the term one time use for a cd-key. you should be able to use that key as much time as you want, for your personal computer.

you don't have to buy another key each to you format your drives. i'd be broke by now!! lol

may your framerates be high and your temperatures be low. #pcmr

As I understand it, there are different versions with different rules. Full version - you can bring along as you change your PCs. But OEM version is tied to hardware. If you change too many parts it gets nuliffied? Amazon says it's tied to motherboard.

What else does it do?

It speeds up general usage as well. Believe it or not, your BROWSER becomes faster, just for having an ssd to dump page cache to faster than it could on a hard disk. If you have multiple programs open at once, they don't choke up and slow down because of hdd usage. Programs launch faster, even if they aren't installed on the ssd.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨
