Hi, just installed my new seagate archive drive 8tb into my pc. one problem is that it doesnt always show up on boot, it pops up with an autoplay dialogue box after a few minutes.

The second problem is that i can always hear it working, maybe the heads moving or something, even when im not accessing it. is there a way too put it to sleep while i dont need it or find out what is causing it to activate?

thanks guys.

Windows is always going to be doing background things on it, so it'll always be on. Check your drivers to see if that's why it takes so long to recognize.

I am conducting some polls regarding your opinion of large technology companies. I would appreciate your response.

Hey there Stonyer,

I would also go ahead and suggest checking if you have all your latest drivers and OS updates. Maybe check for a possible firmware update for that particular drive.
You drive should spin down whenever you are not accessing it so make sure none of your applications is not using it. Contacting the manufacturer for some advice is also a good idea. :)

@CommandMan7 by check drivers i took that to mean, right click on drive, driver options in the properties there? It all checks out.

@captain_WD My OS is Win 7 and is all up to date, by drivers do you mean like motherboard drivers?

I meant to google for drivers, so I just did. It looks like seagate requires some sort of software to use archive drives. You can find them here:

There is also a diagnostic program, that might help.
