New PC - HDD Migration

Go to solution Solved by Samfisher,

After having bought a 4690K new on eBay on a whim, it looks like I'll be rebuilding my PC soon from an AMD build to Intel.

I'm well aware that it's a good idea to do a fresh install of the OS, I can live with that. In my current setup, I've got a 120GB Kingston SSD for my OS and a 1TB Seagate HDD for mass storage (including all of my games). If I put a fresh OS on my SSD, will I be able to keep the data on my HDD? Or will that need to be formatted to work with an entirely new PC?

HDD won't get touched if you don't select it for formatting during installation.  It contains no system files so it acts like an external HDD for all intents and purposes.

what if you already have an os on hard drive but want to switch to SSD while changing motherboards/cpu's

If you change Motherboards you need a new Windows key.

The system files can stay on the HDD, as long as you boot from the SSD, they will take up space though.

Well, with an i7, GTX 1080, Full tower and flashy lights, it can obviously only be for one thing:

My SSD already has an OS on it. There's no OS on my HDD.

Just install Windows on the SSD and manually delete the Windows folder in the HDD in Safe Mode.

what is safe mode?

Windows Safe Mode.  Spam F8 before boot.  It's a mode that loads no drivers and no programs and is the bare basic Windows, just enough to boot.  Delete the OS folder in the HDD.

Hey there fellow captain :)

It's a good option to reinstall the OS to prevent any compatibility issues. Regarding the HDD though, you would still be able to access the data, but the applications that have created a spot in the registry would need to be reinstalled.

@Aytex it really depends on the type of the OS. If it's a OEM you would need a new key in order to use it with different hardware. You can contact the OS manufacturer if they can cancel your current certificate and issue you a new one if you are changing hardware. :)

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^
